Hi – I am thinking of a safri in Kenya in March and wondered what you think. Is it a good time to go for wildlife/ weather (I will add a week on the beach in Mombasa). Also, I’ve heard that mosquitos are at the most active at this time which worries me as I do get eaten alive when I travel. Any thoughts?
March should be an excellent time to travel, but it really depends on when the "long rains" season begins which typically occurs at the end of the month.
As for the mosquitos I haven’t heard that they are more active in March and they shouldn’t bother you too much on safari, but down at the coast you should make sure to take an anti-malarial.
We advise our clients to buy their anti-malarial on arrival (they are effective and MUCH cheaper than if you bought them at home) and we assist them in that purchase.
I know of him from reading about Jim Morrison liking his works, but can’t remember the name :S
Morrison remains one of the most popular and influential singers/writers in rock history as The Doors’ catalog has become a staple of classic rock radio stations. To this day he is widely regarded as the prototypical rock star: surly, sexy, scandalous and mysterious. The leather trousers he was fond of wearing both on stage and off have since become stereotyped as rock star apparel.
Iggy and the Stooges are said to have formed after lead singer Iggy Pop was inspired by Morrison while attending a Doors concert in Ann Arbor, Michigan.[50] One of Pop’s most popular songs, "The Passenger", is said to be based on one of Morrison’s poems.[51] After Morrison’s death, Pop was considered as a replacement lead singer for The Doors; the surviving Doors gave him some of Morrison’s belongings and hired him as a vocalist for a series of shows.
Wallace Fowlie, professor emeritus of French literature at Duke University, wrote Rimbaud and Jim Morrison, subtitled "The Rebel as Poet – A Memoir". In this book, Fowlie recounts his surprise at receiving a fan letter from Morrison who, in 1968, thanked him for his latest translation of Arthur Rimbaud’s verse into English. "I don’t read French easily", he wrote, "…your book travels around with me." Fowlie went on to give lectures on numerous campuses comparing the lives, philosophies and poetry of Morrison and Rimbaud.
Scott Weiland, the vocalist of Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, as well as Scott Stapp of Creed, claim Morrison to be their biggest influence and inspiration. Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver have both covered "Roadhouse Blues" by the Doors. Weiland also filled in for Morrison to perform "Break On Through" with the rest of the Doors. Stapp filled in for Morrison for "Light my fire", "Riders on the Storm" and "Roadhouse Blues" on VH1 Storytellers. Creed performed their version of "Riders on the Storm" with Robbie Krieger for the 1999 Woodstock Festival.
The book The Doors by the remaining Doors quotes Morrison’s close friend Frank Lisciandro as saying that too many people took a remark of Morrison’s that he was interested in revolt, disorder, and chaos “to mean that he was an anarchist, a revolutionary, or, worse yet, a nihilist. Hardly anyone noticed that Jim was restating Rimbaud and the Surreal poets
We visited Lazy Lagoon after a safari, and what a place to unwind, and get the dust out of your pores.
It is a small private island lodge, and is run by Alex and Janie Fox, whose knowledge of Africa is just amazing.
You can only arrive one way, and that is by boat, and be warned you will get your feet and legs wet because you will have to wade ashore!!
When you get there a most pleasant surprise awaits because here in the back of beyond is a real Robinson Cruso island, a hidden, almost unknown gem, and speaking personally, I hope it stays that way!!
You will sleep in one of twelve bandas, set by the beach, which is actually about five miles of unspoilt white sand paradise. The bandas are well furnished, and have solar powered hot water, a large shady verandah with spacious rooms and big windows. They are constructed from palm leaf thatch in keeping with the local tradition, and with a wooden panelled interior. The verandahs are perfect for relaxing in a hammock, and watching the fishing fleet go out and come in, and there is a loft area where childrens’ beds can be put.
There is room service, and the beach is right on your doorstep.
The food is impressive in its variety and choice, with all three daily meals being incredibly varied. The seafood as you would expect is abundant and very fresh.
You eat in the restaurant which along with the bar are at the tip of the island with the most glorious views of the lagoon.
There is as little or as much as you want to do, but after a safari most people will want to chill out for a few days, and the deserted beach, the beautiful clear turquoise sea can be swum in at high or low tide. Why not try snorkelling, or kayaking, or sailing, or take a dhow trip to a sand island, or a dusk cruise. Perhaps you just want to lie in the sun, and read.
Whatever you do, try to visit Bagamovo town, because it was Livingstone’s ‘Gateway to Africa’ with a truly dark past, as it was the slave port from mainland Africa to Zanzibar. You cannot fail to be moved by the whipping tree which can still be seen in the town square, and the cemetery which bears witness to the suffering and death of the Europeans who made their lives here.
Lazy Lagoon claims to be the most exclusive beach resort in Tanzania.
This might well be fair comment, but I would say a stay of three or four nights either before or after a safari would be about right
