No, sometimes they’re fertile, at least when the liger or tigon is female. They had that one-quarter lion 3 quarters tiger at the Shambala preserve for instance, look up “ti-tigon” in a search engine, I’ll bet it even has a wikipedia entry. I don’t think they have different numbers of chromosomes, they would be completely incompatible if that was true. They’re only barely different species remember

i love all big cats they are all beautiful. i also think it is amazing how leopards ca climb and jump from tree to tree while carrying a kill. truly amazing

ligers cant reproduce for the same reason mules cant, tigers and lions have diff ammount of chromosomes, so they cant pair properly, breeding members of the same family is dangerous, i suppose the reason was too see what would come out.

They may be …
They may be beautiful, but they have no purpose. By useless I mean they would not survive in nature, and nature has no place for them. They don’t have a function except to get oos and ahhs from crowds which is sad. If it was an accident, I think they should learn from this and keep the species seperated when in heat. But even so, they are quite pretty.

The start of ligers was when a female tiger went into heat and they kept a male lion in the same compound with the tiger, not expecting the tiger to become pregnant because they’re not of the same species, this was not intended to happen, and I doubt that the people studying this animal aren’t going to keep on breeding them. I disagree that these animals are useless because they are beautiful creatures, but I do agree that we need to spend more money on saving the critical endangered.

Siberian Tigers are the biggest of the big cats, while our beautiful leopards are the STRONGEST of the big cats. Siberian Tigers outweigh all of them and are very powerful. What makes leopards so magnificent is that they are able to carry their kill, not to mention DEAD WEIGHT up a tree. Pound-for-Pound that is a very powerful being.

Some ligers can’t reproduce; they’re sterile creatures anyway. So I don’t know why they find it fascinating to breed an animal that ‘looks impressive’ when it’s really never going to amount to anything in the big cat gene pool. o_0

I didn’t know that. I kinda wish I didn’t. I just don’t understand why we even bred them in the first place. It wasn’t for research. Why would you research and animal that was never here and never should be here. I hope they don’t continue this after the final one dies.

Ligers genes are unable to function correctly. Ligers never stop growing. They reach huge sizes, until they can no longer even move themselves, and some of them are born with horrible genetic deficiencies that equate them to retardation. It’s sickening, and all ligers die horribly.
