I don’t know whether or not you have considered not only a vacation in South Africa, or even got as far as the planning stage. For most people a visit to South Africa tends to be in the middle of the European Winter, because of the attractions of blue sky and a much better temperature.

Naturally enough this is high season time in South Africa, and we should all know exactly what that means.
It of course means high prices, and crowds, two things that would put me right off.

Going to South Africa has to include at least a few days spent on Safari, so what does that mean in high season?
The first thing it means is a 40% hike in hotel room rates, and in the same vein, a substantial rise in air fares especially around the Christmas to New Year period.

In addition why don’t you consider the following thoughts:

If you want to fly from Europe to Cape Town, then fares drop sharply in mid August, and hotel rates stay low until September. It is true that the temperature in Cape Town over Christmas are around 25 degrees centigrade, and in August only 18 degrees. There is far more rain in August, but what are the advantages of a low season visit apart from the obvious financial one?

The first thing is, that you don’t hopefully go to South Africa to sit and vegetate on a beach, after all you can go to many other less interesting places and do that.

Tehre is more rain so in the Western Cape, The Namaqualand is in full bloom, just for a very short period of time.
It is a great time to go whale watching in Hermanus, and a wonderful time to visit Kruger Park, because this is when the animals congregate around water holes.

So in conclusion the best time to visit South Africa is not December/January, but August

Cape town in the summer because it has a Mediterranean climate which means it is rainy in the winter.
Durban and East coast, your best bet is in the winter because the humidity and heat makes it unpleasant in the summer.
The Eastern cape all year round should be good.
The interior of the country is most beautiful in spring time and the temperatures are mild then.

If it is game viewing you have in mind, the best time would be winter or early spring. The bush is less dense and the bushveld not so hot.

Cape Town in summer. The north (game parks and so)are better in winter, animal viewing better in winter, nights cool in the north but days lovely and sunny. Since you might want to visit SA’s northen neighbors while you are here definitely winter.
I just spend 3 months in Zambia and I did not see one cloud. While in summer it rains, its hot and humid with plenty bugs around. Early spring is good to see baby animals.

Id say late spring going into summer. If you like the outdoors you will love the spring. Allthe flowers are blooming. You can go down the garden route. Its absolutely beautiful. The wether is great in summer and the beaches warm up a bit. plu its the best tyn to spot all the different wildlife at sea and inland.

    It all depends where youw ant to go and for what purpose, and you can see all previosu answers points to different times;
game watching: I agree winter and early spring (approx july – sept): Not too hot, grass not too long, you can see animals
Summer (Approx Nov – Mar): can be EXTREMELY hot and humid in KZN (I love it, some people don’t)
winter: Cape Town (I think very cold and windy – avoid) if you can

Depends which part of South Africa you want to visit. For my money come to the south coast, southbroom where I live rocks all year. Forget Cape Town, a mountain is a mountain and it ain’t that cool. Jo’brg is good for a few days but head to the South Coast (Durban and turn right!)

That depend where you want to go. South Africa has n long summer and the winter in not that bad. If you want to go on safari go between may and July. I will be winter and dry. But the animals will be in the open and the grass will be short. Other wise it don’t rain much in South Africa, But when it rains it will rain between from December to march. Sometimes not as much, because it is a very dry country. December to March is also the hottest month and August is the windiest. Hope this gave you an Idea
